In the first part of this series, we explored the remarkable moment we find ourselves in: a generation of unexpected millionaires sitting at the centre of the largest wealth transfer in Canadian history, with an unprecedented opportunity to do genuine good. Now comes the practical question: how?
There are several well-established vehicles for managing and deploying significant charitable capital. Each has real strengths and real limitations. What follows is a plain-language guide to the most common options.
Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)
Think of a DAF as a dedicated charitable bank account. You deposit a lump sum, receive your tax receipt immediately, then direct grants to registered charities over time at your own pace. Simple to set up, tax efficient, and it keeps capital available to move quickly. The limitation: dollars sitting in a DAF are not generating impact. Only deployed dollars are. Without a clear distribution strategy, DAFs can become holding accounts rather than giving vehicles.
Private Foundations
A more formal vehicle, typically funded with family wealth and governed by a board. Canadian law requires a minimum annual disbursement of 5% of assets. The case: high-profile, enduring, and a powerful mechanism for transmitting philanthropic values across generations. The limitation: large sums can remain tied up for decades, and without strong governance, mission drift is a real risk after the founding generation.
Legacy and Planned Gifts
A bequest to a charity through your will is one of the most meaningful expressions of lifelong values. It says: this is what mattered to me, and I want it to continue. Deeply personal. The limitation: you will not be present to see the impact, and precise drafting matters enormously.
Philanthropic Grants to Your Children
One of the most underused approaches we discuss with clients. Setting aside a defined portion of charitable capital as a grant for your children, with the instruction that these funds are for charity, develops giving instincts, creates shared family purpose, and plants generosity as a value rather than just an asset.
Whichever vehicle or combination you choose, start with why. Once you are clear on the destination, the vehicle and the route become much easier to choose. WAVE Philanthropy works with high-net-worth families across BC to design giving strategies that are intentional, tax-efficient, and deeply aligned with your values.
