CAUSE

Our COMPETE for a Cause project began when we recognized an opportunity to revive crowd-sourced funding and provide individuals with the chance to step out of their comfort zones in support of a charity close to their hearts. Essentially, COMPETE for a Cause was designed to empower everyday people and community champions, regardless of their means, to engage in philanthropy and contribute in a significant manner – just as it should be.

The concept is simple and meant to be enjoyable, engaging, and somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Anyone can challenge Keith and his friends, self-described 'freak athletes,' to an activity of their choice. If successful, WAVE Philanthropy will donate $10,000 to the charity of their choice. Thus far, we are 0 - 10, with the only winners being local charities and the community champions – exactly as the challenge was intended. COMPETE for a Cause is our way of infusing philanthropy with fun, accessibility, significance, and engagement, allowing everyone to participate regardless of their scale, skill, or interests.

08: the FLOOR HOCKEY

Another hockey-related challenge brought out the best in Team Brewster and his friends. However, our challenger, Angela Price, had a couple of tricks up her sleeve. Not only did she enlist the help of the incredible athletes from the Special Olympics of British Columbia (Kelowna) floor hockey team, but she also called in a pro – her husband and NHL legend, Carey Price, for back up!

07: the WRESTLER

Growing up in the 90s, I was raised on wrestling. So last fall, when I stumbled my way into an indie pro wrestling event called THRASH Wrestling in Kelowna, I knew I had to get involved. Fast forward a few months, and we were given the opportunity to participate in a charity wrestling match – and participate we did! While I don't advocate for the use of chairs in the name of justice, sometimes they must be wielded in the name of chair-ity!

06: the CATAPULT

Catapults have long symbolized power, dominance, and masterful engineering. So, it was only fitting that Keith and Cam would be challenged to a catapult-building competition by a group of elite engineers. This month's installment of Compete for a CAUSE saw Urban Systems challenge our 'freak athletes' in a showdown of skill, intellect, and execution. The outcome was shocking, and rumor has it they are still searching for our playdough ball!

05: the PICKLEBALL

Our Compete for a CAUSE episodes can really take on a life of their own, with all types of activities, hobbies, and participants represented. This instalment saw two local pickle-ball legends (Shirley and Suzie) step up to challenge Keith and Cam. Although the boys got off to a good start, the girls were playing possum, and came on strong with skill, tenacity, and borderline disrespectful trash talk that had to be edited out of the video.

04: the BREAKAWAY

Keith was recently challenged by the 'internet sensation' Nick the Goalie to a breakaway challenge, with hopes of raising valuable funds for the Canucks Autism Network. Nick, who has amassed tens of millions of views on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok through his goaltending prowess and charismatic personality, has been the backbone of various teams in recreation leagues across BC. He wanted to test himself against the infamous Sudbury Sniper! However, what Nick didn't know is that Keith never plays fair. He showed up to the challenge with some friends, hoping to break his losing streak!

03: the CORNHOLE

In our most recent challenge, our dear friend Ginny stepped up and challenged us to a game of cornhole. This fringe sport, popularized by celebrants at weddings, family reunions, and Gyro Beach, was new to us, and somehow victory slipped from our grasp. I blame the wind and demand a rematch!

02: the SOFTBALL

Despite the misconception that softball isn't a real sport, Keith and Cam bravely accepted a challenge from a group of athletes aiming to raise funds for UBCO Athletics by facing off against them in a game of softball. However, the duo soon discovered that their opponents were none other than the reigning national champions, the UBCO Women's Softball Team. The challenge didn't unfold as expected, with the girls securing an easy victory. Yet, they graciously used the opportunity to impart some basics of the sport to Keith and Cam, showcasing why they are champions both on and off the field.

01: the SHOOTOUT

We launched the Compete for a Cause initiative to offer people a lively and engaging experience, providing them with the opportunity to raise funds and awareness for causes close to their hearts. Our inaugural episode led us to Danica Brown, who put her hockey goaltending skills on the line in hopes of raising valuable funds for a charity dear to her heart- the BC SPCA.
